CBI Social Action - The 2020 US Census: Why It Matters, Why Vulnerable Communities Are At Risk Of Being Undercounted, And What You Can Do To Help

Sunday, March 1, 2020 5 Adar 5780

3:00 PM - 5:00 PMO'Manksy Hall

Kathy O’Connell, the Census Bureau's partnership specialist for Central Virginia, explains in a free community-wide event the high-stakes work of organizing a fair count for the 2020 US Census, the once-a-decade event that will impact how billions of tax dollars are distributed and how political maps are redrawn. Delegate Sally Hudson (VA District 57, Charlottesville) will make opening remarks.

Each person not counted in the census potentially represents a loss of $2,000/year to states and localities as well as lost legislative seats. The Census Bureau estimates that minorities, including African Americans and Hispanics, were undercounted by 1.5 million in 2010; The Urban Institute fears an even bigger undercount this year. This event will identify steps we can all take to ensure that all communities are fully counted.
