CBI Sisterhood

CBI Sisterhood, comprised of a diverse group of women, serves as a means to build a tight-knit community, close social voids, offer support during transitional times, enhance the personal growth of women and broadly support the CBI community. Like the CBI congregation, which strives to support and encourage diverse styles of Jewish worship and expression consistent with an open and tolerant philosophy of Judaism, CBI Sisterhood values most its cross-generational membership that is inclusive of the broadest array of women in all walks of life.

CBI Sisterhood seeks to fulfill needs that are not being met by (or not currently the mission of) the existing Jewish community. This overarching goal requires CBI Sisterhood to routinely review its efforts to fill new voids and forego services and activities that are being met by others to avoid duplication of efforts. At the present time, the key functions of the CBI Sisterhood include supporting CBI communities requesting assistance; supporting CBI Executive Committee as requested; boosting CBI volunteerism; providing fundraising support; and organizing social, educational, religious and other activities to maximize the connections between all Sisterhood members in support of CBI's overall goals.

Membership in Sisterhood is open to all women. CBI membership is encouraged, but not required. Membership dues are $36 annual for CBI members, and $42 annually for non-CBI members. Membership is renewable each summer and payable with CBI dues. Affiliate member dues (for Sisterhood members' children under 18 and Sisterhood members' husbands wishing to join the Sisterhood) are $5 annually per person. Membership in CBI Sisterhood is complimentary during the first year of CBI membership.

Mission Statement

Congregation Beth Israel Sisterhood provides an opportunity for women in Central Virginia to serve, learn and socialize together in friendship. CBI Sisterhood, comprised of a diverse group of women, serves as a means to build a tight-knit community, close social voids, offer support during transitional times, enhance the personal growth of women and support the CBI community. Like the CBI congregation, which strives to support and encourage diverse styles of Jewish worship and expression consistent with an open and tolerant philosophy of Judaism, CBI Sisterhood values most its cross-generational membership that is inclusive of the broadest array of women in all walks of live.

CBI Sisterhood will seek to fulfill needs that are not being met by (or are not the mission of) the existing Jewish community. This overarching goal will require CBI Sisterhood to routinely review its efforts to fill new voids and forego services that are being met by others to avoid duplication of efforts.

Membership in Sisterhood is open to all women. CBI membership is encouraged, but not required. Membership dues are $25 annually for CBI members, and $36 annually for non-CBI members. Membership is renewable each summer, and payable with CBI dues. Affiliate member dues (for Sisterhood members' husbands and their children under 18 years) are $5 per person annually. Membership in CBI Sisterhood is complimentary during the first year of CBI membership.

Upon its inception, CBI Sisterhood has chosen not to formally affiliate with the Women of Reform Judaism (WRJ) organization. At a future date, CBI Sisterhood may choose to revisit this decision and formally affiliate itself with WRJ, further broadening the impact of CBI Sisterhood.
