Shopping for Jewish Stuff

Although Charlottesville may not seem like a very "ethnically diverse" place compared to most large US cities, it does pretty well for its size. Some Jewish foods and other items can be obtained locally, so we have attempted to compile a guide to local resources for "Jewish Stuff". It is by no means comprehensive. Let us know when you find something that should be added: (webmaster@cbicville.org).

Full contact information for all sources listed within the text can be found in the directory below.

See also the guide to kosher food shopping page--"Keeping Kosher in Charlottesville".

Food Items (not certified kosher)

Challah and Baked Goods

There is no kosher bakery in the area, but several bakeries in the area offer challah on Fridays. Most bakeries should use a pareve recipe, but if it's critical to you to know for sure, it would be a good idea to call and ask about the ingredients. Bakeries in town which make challah on Fridays: Albemarle Baking Company, BreadWorks (which trains and employs disabled people), Chandler's Bakery, and Whole Foods Market bakery department. The challah at Giant Food bakery department is dairy. It is a good idea to call ahead to the bakeries on Friday morning to have them set aside challah for you, since they often run out by dinner time.

Chandler's also offers special items for holidays, such as round challah and honey cake for Rosh Hashanah. Whole Foods sometimes has rugelach, as does Giant and Foods of all Nations.

Deli Meats

Giant Food and Foods of All Nations carry Hebrew National salamis, franks, etc., which are not under kosher supervision.

Non-Food Items

Shabbat Candles

The CBI Gift Shop carries small boxes of Shabbat candles, as do several grocery stores in town. It is sometimes difficult to find large boxes (72) in the grocery stores, but the CBI Gift Shop usually has them.

Gifts/Jewelry

In addition to the CBI Gift Shop, Quilts Unlimited has a large assortment of Judaica...artwork, plates, candlesticks, mazuzot, jewelry, and Lynne Goldman Studios carries some Judaica jewelry designs.
