Samuel and Evelyn Linden LectureshipJewish Music: a celebration in three parts
(all sessions at CBI except as noted)January 25-27, 2008: Jewish Dance, led by Steve Weintraub (a teacher, choreographer, and performer specializing in Jewish dance. He received his training with Alvin Ailey and Erick Hawkins, and danced for Felix Fibich. He teaches Yiddish dance workshops internationally, leads dancing at Simchas, and collaborated on Hopkele, a cd of music especially for dancing)view pictures from the weekend
- Fri, Jan 25 (8:15 pm): Steve gives a talk during Shabbat services, describing Jewish dance and music. Rabbi Tom will accompany Steve on the guitar.
- Sat, Jan 26 (7:30 pm): Havdalah service and refreshments, followed by a "lecture-demo." Steve will give a slide show presentation and demonstration on the history of Jewish dance.
- Sun, Jan 27 (10:15-noon): Steve presents an "Old World Wedding," including traditional Jewish wedding music and dances, for parents and their Religious School children. This will be participatory for the families.
- Sun, Jan 27 (4:00-6 pm): Workshop on Yiddish dance (especially Klezmer music). This is aimed at those who love folk dancing. Steve will lead and instruct the participants, so that they learn a number of dances. Please Note: dinner will be provided for those attending this Yiddish folk dance workshop (RSVP required at the CBI office 295-6382).
- Sun, Jan 27 (7-9 pm): Jewish dance party. Steve leads the festivities, assisted by those who came to the afternoon workshop. The UVA Klezmer Ensemble, under the direction of Joel Rubin, will accompany Steve for the party. Refreshments will be served.
February 24, 2008: "Leonard Bernstein, His Music and His Faith(s): The Kaddish, Psalms, and the Mass." Presentation by Kate Tamarkin and Michael Slon (UVA Music Dept. faculty)
- Sun, 4 pm: Most of us are familiar with some of Bernstein’s wonderful music. This session will help us learn how Bernstein expressed his Jewishness in his Kaddish Symphony and Chichester Psalms, and how his theater piece, Mass, reflects another side of this complex musical figure.
March 30, 2008: The Joy of the Nigun, led by Rabbi Eli Silberstein (rabbi at Cornell)
- 3 pm: Rabbi Silberstein leads a concert of nigunim (melodies of spiritual elevation found in the prayers and teachings of Chassidic communities), accompanied by the UVA Klezmer Ensemble under the direction of Joel Rubin. NOTE: This session takes place at Gravity Lounge, 103 S. First St. just off the Downtown Mall.)
- 7 pm: Rabbi Silberstein leads a workshop for lay prayer leaders, on nigunim. This workshop will help them incorporate nigunim into prayer services and other occasions. (This session takes place at CBI.)
