Board of Directors

The Synagogue's Board of Directors ("the Board") is responsible to the membership of Congregation Beth Israel for policy setting. The Board has ultimate responsibility for the organization's fiscal, legal and risk management concerns; long-range and strategic planning; fundraising and resource development; membership relationships; oversight and support of committees; and direct supervision of the Senior Rabbi and Synagogue Executive Director. The Board meets bi-monthly; general meetings are open to members. A slate of board member nominations is prepared by a Nominating Committee and voted on by the congregation at the Annual Membership Meeting in May. The Board is always open to suggestions for potential committee and board members.

Executive Committee

The Board of Directors delegates oversight of the implementation of its policies and programs to the Executive Committee, with the exceptions of:

  • Long-range/Strategic Planning;
  • Approval of the annual operating budget;
  • Appointment, review and approval of the Audit Committee and its reports;
  • Hiring and dismissal of key professionals (Senior Rabbi, Synagogue Executive Director, Rabbi Educator and Preschool Director)
  • Others, as deemed necessary by the Board.

The Executive Committee assists the Board of Directors in making decisions and setting direction in a more informed, efficient and effective manner. The Executive Committee makes recommendations to the Board of Directors on matters requiring Board consideration and approval, including but not limited to programming that would redirect human/financial resources from priorities outlined in the Strategic Plan; programming/staffing changes that would require financial resources beyond what is allocated in the annual budget; and deviations from approved Board policies and/or procedures.

The Executive Committee meets during the months that the Board is not in session. Agenda items can be submitted for consideration with a phone call, email or letter to the President of the Board.
